Angels appear throughout the Bible, playing a crucial role in God’s divine plan. They were present at the dawn of creation, guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24), and they are there at the end of time, sounding the trumpets in the Book of Revelation. From the Old Testament to the New, angels serve as God’s messengers, protectors, and warriors, guiding and assisting humanity.
Yet, in today’s world, many dismiss angels as mythological or symbolic beings, mere relics of ancient stories. But have we truly considered how integral they are to the biblical narrative—and how they continue to be active in our lives today?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that each person is entrusted with a guardian angel, a divine companion sent by God to protect and guide us.
“Call upon your guardian angel to help you in times of need. They want to help you more than you want to be helped.” – St. John Vianney
“Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you.” – St. Francis de Sales
We are not alone. Our guardian angel is a friend and companion, given to us by God to walk with us through life’s challenges. Developing the habit of speaking with our angel strengthens our awareness of God’s presence and opens us to divine assistance.
By praying the following prayer, we invoke the presence of our guardian angels and call upon their help in our daily lives.
When you pray this prayer, say it with another person. Invite them to pray with you.
Prayer Calling Forth Our Angels
Holy Spirit, send us our guardian angels,
As they rolled away the stone at the tomb (Matthew 28:2-7), may angels remove the obstacles that keep us from new life in Jesus.
To the east, where Gabriel once stood before Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20), reminding us that even in doubt, Your promises will be fulfilled.
To the west, where angels sang to shepherds (Luke 2:8-15), guiding us to bring Your good news to those in darkness who need of hope.
To the south, where an angel called Joseph to Egypt to escape Herod’s wrath (Matthew 1:20-24), helping us to overcome sin, and follow Your will despite our failures.
To the north, where the angel directed Philip (Acts 8:26), lead us out of our comfort zones to make a difference.
Like the angels who freed Peter (Acts 12:7-11), send our guardian angels to break the chains that bind our friends and family.
May Raphael who healed Tobit's blindness (Tobit 11:7-15), teach us to be a healing presence in our lives.
May Michael, who cast out darkness (Revelation 12:7-9), stand beside us in our battles against our darkness and fear.
May angels who stood at Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven (Acts 1:10-11), remind us always to keep our eyes on the Father’s plans for us.
Like Mary who said “yes” to Gabriel, with the Holy Spirit, may we be open to our guardian angels this day.
Amen.
