Embracing Simplicity

   - in a Culture of Excess

This guided reflection 'Embracing Simplicity in a Culture of Excess' explores how modern society promotes materialism, consumerism, and busyness, which often lead to stress and dissatisfaction. It encourages reflection on what truly matters by following the example of Jesus and Mary, who lived simple, faith-centered lives. The document discusses practical ways to embrace simplicity, such as reassessing work-life balance, resisting the urge for financial excess, and making time for stillness. It highlights that choosing a simpler life allows for deeper relationships, greater purpose, and spiritual fulfillment. A series of reflective questions guide readers in evaluating their lifestyle choices, and a final call to embrace simplicity as a Marist value emphasizes the importance of trusting God and being present to others.

Journal and reflect on the following
  1. In what areas of my life am I feeling overwhelmed by excess or busyness?
  2. How can I incorporate moments of stillness and reflection into my daily routine?
  3. What does 'enough' look like for me in terms of material possessions and financial goals?
  4. Who are the people in my life that inspire me to live more simply, and what can I learn from them?
  5. How does my current lifestyle reflect my core values, and where is there room for greater alignment?
  6. What small changes can I make today to prioritize relationships and faith over consumption and achievement?
  7. How can I cultivate a deeper trust in God’s providence and let go of unnecessary worries about the future?Stop and spend some time journaling and quiet reflection.

Final Prayer

Loving God, in a world that clamours for more, help us to desire less. Teach us to find joy in simplicity, fulfillment in presence, and peace in contentment. May we let go of the need to have more, to earn more and possess more.

Encourage us to embrace the stillness that allows us to hear Your voice, the wisdom to discern what truly matters, and the courage to step away from the endless pursuit of excess.

Fill our hearts with contentment and gratitude for what we have and trust in Your providence. May our lives reflect the humility, simplicity, and generosity of Mary as she follows Jesus, and may we always walk the path of simple things in our lives, like in Nazareth but in our own lives and own contexts today, with You God, as our guide. Amen.
